Fredrik Lindgren wins World Cup bronze at Speedway after drama

Fredrik Lindgren was third in total before the World Cup final in Torun, Poland. Taking home the gold required a victory for the Swede and a failure for reigning world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik.

Lindgren drove better in the first 20 heats, but Zmarzlik also advanced to the semi-finals where the conditions were very clear: victory or second place for the Pole would be enough to secure the World Cup title.

He succeeded. Bartosz Zmarzlik drove second behind Fredrik Lindgren and clinched his second consecutive World Cup gold in front of a crazy local crowd.

– It’s absolutely amazing. Mentally, today was very difficult for me. I’m so happy right now, I couldn’t dream of this, says Zmarzlik on the Viaplay stream.

In the final, Fredrik Lindgren had to finish on the podium to pinch silver against Tai Woffinden. Then the Swede had trouble with the bike early on and was forced to cancel. Fourth place meant Lindgren had to run a decisive series against Woffinden for silver.

There, Woffinden dominated from start to finish and took home the silver before the Swede. Lindgren had to settle for World Cup bronze, like two years ago.
