Once again, the people of India are showing their anger that it has happened again. Before long, two young women, ages 19 and 22, died as a result of gang rape. Both women belonged to the Dalit people who are at the bottom of the social ladder and were previously called “casteless”.
The 22 year old the woman was put in a vehicle, raped and beaten so severely that she later died. The 19-year-old woman was assaulted, tortured and raped near her home and then thrown into a field where she was found. In 2018, a woman was raped every 15 minutes in India.
– If the Uttar Pradesh government is on the side of women, then why do rapes happen every day ?, says a protesting woman.
– There are sexual assaults and other crimes against women here and in our country all the time. We must teach the government a lesson, he tells local media.
The state of Uttar Pradesh, where the victims came from, is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party and is ranked as one of the most unsafe states for women in India. Even within the ruling party, votes are now being raised for the safety of women.
What has further upset feelings is that in both cases the police have ordered the cremation of the victims without the consent of the relatives and without autopsies of the women.
This week stopped two prominent politicians from the opposition Congress party, Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi, by the police when visiting the family of the 19-year-old woman. The two were taken away by the police. That incident has now turned the cases of the two murdered women into a hot political issue.
Rape and sexual violence have been in the spotlight in India since the gang rape and murder of a young woman in Delhi in 2012. This prompted major protests and changes to the country’s rape law. Despite the new laws, there is no indication that crimes against women and girls are decreasing.
