Sudan’s transitional government has signed a peace agreement with the umbrella organization Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF).
The agreement was signed on Saturday in South Sudan’s neighboring capital, Juba. Representatives from the UN and the African Union (AU), as well as heads of state and representatives from Chad, Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were present to witness the ceremony.
The agreement consists of several difficult issues, including the right to land, damages caused by war, other financial compensation, the division of power and the return of refugees and displaced persons.
The SRF rebel coalition is made up of rebel groups from the Darfur region and the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states. Under the agreement, the rebel groups will gradually join the army, but until then they will be able to keep their weapons.
The agreement does not mean an immediate end to all violence, as two major rebel groups have not accepted the agreement. One of them, the SLM group from Darfur, carried out an attack on the army until Monday.
