Researchers have found coronavirus in the sewage of nine Swedish cities. Now, the researchers hope that the wastewater analysis method can help detect future virus outbreaks, reports P4 Dalarna.

– If the disease is repelled by a vaccine, but it comes back, then you could measure the levels in the wastewater and follow the process, says Annelie Hedström, assistant professor of VA technology at Luleå University of Technology at Q4.

She believes she can then avoid urging everyone who has cold symptoms to go to the health center and get tested, which could instead track virus outbreaks by testing the sewage.

The next step for the researchers now is to compare the amount of coronavirus collected, but how many were actually sick at the time.

– It is important to be able to relate the concentration to the number of inhabitants who are sick, because we need to do a lot of calculations and we have not had time to do that yet, says Annelie Hedström.
