Ronald Reagan was shot and killed in an assassination attempt outside a Washington hotel in 1981.
Now the crown crisis in the White House is compared to the days that shook America.
In less than 39 years, a sitting president has faced a life-threatening condition.
Even before the dramatic images, which showed Donald Trump being airlifted to Walter Reed Military Hospital last night, the president’s coronary disease was compared to the event that shook the United States in March 1981.
For the first time since then, a sitting president has suffered from a potentially life-threatening condition, writes the New York Times.
Fast progress
Many observers have been surprised by the rapid course of events. It only took 18 hours from the first confirmation from the White House in the early hours of Friday morning that Donald Trump tested positive for the virus until he was taken to the hospital.
According to an official statement from President Sean Conley’s doctor on Friday night, Trump is exhausted but in a good mood. According to the New York Times, he had a low fever and cough on Friday.
But after the dramatic development of events, it is speculated that his condition is worse than what has been officially communicated.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. last night, Donald Trump arrived with his Marine One helicopter at the military hospital, which has its own room for the president with offices, conference rooms, a kitchen and its own private intensive care unit.
Reports that the president was treated with the highest dose of an experimental antiviral drug, which only showed up as “promising in tests” on Tuesday, but has yet to be approved by the US Drug Administration. They have also raised questions about the severity of their condition.
The drug is developed by Regeneron and is a cocktail of antibodies that is taken intravenously and is believed to be able to lower virus levels in the body if taken early in the development of the disease.
Labored breathing
Donald Trump did not speak to reporters when he entered the helicopter wearing a mouth guard, but was content to give the go-ahead to the meeting outside the White House. Shortly after Marine One landed on Walter Reed, the president tweeted a greeting video recorded shortly before, thanking her for all the greetings and confirming that she was heading to the hospital.
– I think I’m fine, he says in the video.
According to reports from CNN overnight, Trump was short of breath when he reached Walter Reed and was very tired. The White House has not said what happened in the 18 hours since the first news that prompted the dramatic decision to take him to the hospital. Nor has Trump’s doctor, Sean Conley, been allowed to meet with the press and answer questions.
But it was announced that Donald Trump’s condition did not deteriorate during the day and that there was no cause for concern. It has also been said that there are no plans to begin a formal and temporary transfer of presidential power to Vice President Mike Pence.

Critical days
Experts believe that the next few days will be critical for Donald Trump and ultimately discovering how severe the constitutional crisis is likely to be. According to the New York Times, there are many indications that the president was infected during last Saturday’s ceremony when he introduced Amy Coney Barrett as his candidate to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.
A dozen of those who attended the ceremony, few at the time practicing social distancing or wearing mouth guards, have announced that they tested positive for COVID-19.
Overnight, former presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway, who also attended the ceremony, also announced that she has tested positive for coronavirus and is showing mild symptoms.
– They may have had a super spreader, says CNN medical expert Sanjay Gupta.
If that’s when the president became infected, symptoms appeared after five days, the period of time that is considered the most common. And the eighth day is considered the most critical. So, the condition of the small group that develops a serious illness usually deteriorates rapidly. The fever rises and the cough becomes stronger.

Compare with Reagan
As information flowed through the night, comparisons to the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan became increasingly common among scarred journalists and political pundits in direct coverage on American television channels.
Then 39 years ago, Ronald Reagan was shot dead by the murderer John Hinckley Jr. outside a hotel in Washington. The president was seriously injured by a rebound that hit his arm, punctured his lung and caused severe internal bleeding. Reagan was close to death when he was admitted to the hospital, but doctors managed to stabilize him during an emergency operation.
The medical team has stated that the majority of people in their 70s would not have survived such a serious injury. But Ronald Reagan was in excellent physical health and survived the crisis. He was also lucky. No one in the limo after the assassination attempt knew that he had been shot. But the bodyguards’ swift decision to take him to the hospital instead of returning to the White House saved his life.
He spent almost two weeks in the hospital before he could be discharged and return to a certain service. No formal transfer of presidential power took place during the crisis, but Secretary of State Alexander Haig declared that he was in control and Vice President George Bush returned to Washington from Fort Worth, Texas.
Reagan’s staff did their best to make the situation as stable as possible. Already the day after the operation they allowed him to receive visitors and even had to draft new legislation from his hospital bed. But the condition was worse than it appeared and recovery took time. It was 49 days after the shooting before leaving Washington and 79 days before holding a press conference again.
