He chose to break up with Henrik Lundqvist.
Now the president of the New York Rangers club justifies the decision.

Now, a few days after the news that Henrik Lundqvist will be bought from the New York Rangers after 15 years at the club, John Davidson comments on the breakup. The club president believes that this was the right time to break up with the 38-year-old whose contract would expire after next season.
– We wanted to do the right thing for Henrik. We work together with Henrik and his representatives. We had some discussions and came to the conclusion that this was the right time to end for several reasons. One was that Henrik could break free and find out what he wants to do, says John Davidson according to the NY Post.

Lundqvist was bought out of his contract a few days after the club traded defender Marc Staal to the Detroit Red Wings. Staal belonged to the Rangers for thirteen years.
– There are considerations about the salary cap. There will be young players, we are trying to build a winning team, which will take some time. We have come a long way, but we are not close yet. Then everything comes into play. Best of all, Henrik was very honest and we were very honest. And handled everything gracefully.

The decisions to ditch the loyal servants mean that the Rangers have currently reduced the total salary for the upcoming season by 77 million SEK.
– Henrik cares about the Rangers, himself and their future. We had excellent conversations. We as a club must function, and I suppose that in business it is as it is many times.
