Slavina was the editor-in-chief of the local news site Koza Press. A fire was set in front of the local branch of the Russian Interior Ministry in Nizhny Novgorod.

On Thursday, Slavina claimed on Facebook that police searched her apartment for material that could be related to the Open Russia movement, which is funded by former oligarch and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

According to Slavina, the police confiscated, among other things, notebooks, computers and her husband’s mobile phone from the apartment.

In connection with the death of Irina Slavina, the Investigation Committee of Russia launched a preliminary investigation. Later on Friday, the committee’s department in Nizhny Novgorod said the suicide had nothing to do with the search of Slavina’s apartment.

But opposition politician Dmitry Gudkov, in turn, wrote on Instagram that Irina Slavina has been under pressure from the Russian authorities for several years.
