According to the owner’s application for protection hunting to the county administrative board, about 250 cranes remain in their fields every day, Smålandsposten reports.

The damage has been extensive. So far about 10 hectares of crops have been destroyed and according to the owner, another 44 hectares are at risk of being destroyed if it continues as it has been until now.

In this context, it has now been approved by the county administrative board to conduct protective hunting.

However, a maximum of five of the approximately 250 cranes can be fired, according to the decision of the county administrative board. Hunting must also be carried out under special conditions, including that cranes can only be shot if they are in a flock of five or more, according to the newspaper.

Must have scary stuff

The hunter cannot use silencers as the county administrative board wants to achieve maximum scare effect for the cranes to leave the area.

In connection with hunting, the owner must put up the so-called scare material to keep birds away. Such materials can be plastic bags, aluminum foil, LPG guns, and scarecrows.

Protective hunting on cranes is not common, but can be granted if it helps reduce costly damage to crops and soil.
