One billion crowns. It is the new government support package for Swedish sports.

Money to go to companies that really need it.

– It shouldn’t work as a bonus for, say, recruiting players, says Sports Minister Amanda Lind.

During today’s press conference, Sports Minister Amanda Lind was clear about what she and the government want.

The new one billion kronor crisis package should only go to companies that really need it.

The previous crisis package, the one that arrived this spring, was designed primarily to make up for lost revenue, something that benefited elite football in general and men’s football in particular.

“No bonus for recruiting players”

For example, several Allsvenskan clubs could continue to recruit new players during the corona pandemic, for the support money received. Something that was highly criticized and that the government, and the Sports Minister Lind, now want to avoid.

– Support must be based on financial needs. You can’t just look at the loss of income, says Lind and continues:

– This will help the associations that need it. It shouldn’t be an advantage to recruit players, for example.

But how the crisis package will ultimately be distributed is entirely up to the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF).

Lind’s hope now, however, is that RF takes into account the new needs that exist and instead helps smaller businesses survive.

“Reward the clubs that have been rational”

When Sportbladet contacts RF President Björn Eriksson, he has the following to say on the matter:

– When it comes to the big team sports, it’s about prioritizing what the different clubs have done. For example, who made extensive purchases of players, says and continues:

– Our basic idea is that we must adhere to the guidelines, and also leave – and reward – the clubs that have been wise and rational at the expense of the clubs where those moments have not been so prominent.

Eriksson, therefore, points out that big clubs that continue to recruit players in the corona pandemic risk being prioritized outside of the new crisis package.

Exactly how the new support will be distributed will be decided next week.
