The joint message of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, could have important consequences for the last weeks of the electoral campaign, believes the American expert Dag Blanck.

– It is a dramatic development, which will have an effect on how the electoral campaign can be carried out. Can Trump hold the big campaign rallies he likes, and what about the next debate? says Dag Blanck, professor of American studies at Uppsala University.

Häcklade Biden

Not least, the president’s own tendency to downplay the risks of covid-19, and aversion to oral protection, will now rise in discussion, according to Blanck.

In the first election debate against Joe Biden earlier this week, Trump said he believes mouth protection is “fine,” but at the same time hates Biden for his, in Trump’s view, overuse of mouth protection.

– I don’t wear mouth guards like him. Every time you see it, you wear a mouth guard. He can be 200 feet away and still wear the biggest mouth guard I’ve ever seen, Trump said.

Big battle problem

– Trump has always wanted to downplay the importance of the pandemic and has not wanted to wear a mask, something that has become one of the main problems in the United States. Even when it comes to social distancing, he hasn’t been very inclined to follow the advice. Now opponents are sure to say “this is how it goes if you don’t follow the advice,” Blanck says.

TT: Can the message generate sympathy for the president, as in the case of Boris Johnson?

– Then, of course, people feel sorry for him. It depends on the seriousness of the situation. There will surely be expressions of sympathy from both supporters and opponents. It is the president who is ill, says Blanck.
