For all these years, some have doubted that the bow visor was the only reason Estonia sank, why then?
– It is sometimes said that the Palme Investigation was the biggest accident in Swedish legal history. But there are probably some people who think that the way Estonia was run was at least as badly run. You have to remember that there were many things that went wrong already at night. For example, it turned out that several of the helicopters, which went out to try to get people who were freezing to death into the water, had broken winches and were unable to lift people.
– There were also discussions on whether Estonia should be covered or not. Since then, people have been there and diving despite the quiet in the area and so on. There have been a large number of different dissatisfactions with the way this has been handled. So, of course, in a tragedy like this, it’s not always obvious what happened. But so far it must be said that these various conspiracy theories have had no major impact.
Newly discovered damage to the Estonian hull has given life to theories that the ship had been involved in a collision, including an attack, which was later concealed. What speaks for or against?
– It is necessary to remember that when it comes to speculation of this type, it is necessary to look at what is possible and what is logically possible. If you look at Estonia and the hole, of course it could have come from a collision. But considering that the ship has fallen to the bottom and sailed a bit, it is much more likely that it came from the outside when the ship has been dropped or dropped through the water. You can still say that. It is highly unlikely that a collision will occur.
– Even if it had been a collision: in the photos I have seen, the hole is four meters high and at its widest place about a meter and a half, and much smaller in most places because it is almost like a crack. This means that the amount of water that would enter Estonia is not sufficient and has a high enough velocity to be able to initiate a sinking process that goes fast.
– I’ve only made an estimate now, partly based on the old calculations that the Accident Investigation Board has made and based on the figures I’ve seen in the documentary, but an estimate means this isn’t even close. A five to ten square meter hole is needed for such large masses of water to enter that the ship ends up on such a slope that windows and glass break at the top and that water can flow into enclosed spaces from above. Given how small the hole is, I would say that it is physically almost impossible for Estonia to have come down at that speed.
