The President of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri.
Israel and Lebanon are formally at war.
But opponents have decided to hold talks under the auspices of the United States and the United Nations.
The talks between the two enemy countries will be about disputed land and sea borders. Thursday’s announcement came from the speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri.
The confirmation came from both Israel and the United States, which are being asked to promote the talks.
Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said in a statement that these were “direct negotiations”, but an adviser to the Lebanese president said they were indirect negotiations:
– They will sit in the same room, but these are not direct talks, but through UN representatives, said adviser Ali Hamdan.
However, according to the Lebanese president, the framework for the negotiations has been established.
– Both parties, Israel and Lebanon, have called on the United States to play a mediating and advocacy role in establishing borders at sea. . .
The UN and its UN peacekeeping operation welcome the announcement.
The talks will take place at the UN headquarters in Naqoura, a border city in southern Lebanon.
US envoy David Schenker says a proposed date is October 14, but that it has not been confirmed.
Lebanon and Israel are still formally at war. An attempt, under US supervision, to break the deadlock through a 1983 peace treaty quickly collapsed.
