The research “A Modernized Labor Law” published over the summer proposes greater flexibility in the labor market and that it should be possible to exempt five employees from the priority rules instead of two as today. The investigation also proposes that the factual basis requirement for dismissal for personal reasons be maintained, but that in companies with a maximum of 15 employees it should not be possible to reverse dismissals and dismissals. These are important proposals that would improve the job market and get more people to work.

Expensive processes

Nowadays, it is possible to annul a dismissal until the matter is resolved in the labor court, which entails very expensive processes for employers when an employee has misbehaved. Invalidation is intended to be used when the employer has no factual basis, but today it is routinely used to increase the price of a separation agreement. It is not sustainable that it costs so much for an employer to fire employees who misbehave. The problem is that it also means higher unemployment because some entrepreneurs do not dare to hire a person of whom you are not entirely sure. Therefore, the investigation proposal that it should not be possible to annul redundancies and layoffs of smaller companies is important.

Most important competition

More exceptions to the priority rules is also an important step toward a job market that values ​​skills more than the time an employee has been in the workplace. This is especially important for young people who, despite having high skills, risk being fired in the event of cuts because they have not been in a workplace long enough. Sweden’s competitiveness is threatened when companies are unable to retain the most competent employees. Making more exceptions to the priority rules possible would reduce the number of young people discriminated against in the labor market.

The changes in LAS that are now on the table are ultimately about jobs. When the exception to the priority rules for small businesses was passed, thousands of new jobs were created in Sweden. Changes in labor laws are needed to get more people to get a job. Since taking office, the government has pursued a policy that is detrimental to the Swedish labor market with high taxes and more subsidies. Today, more than 200,000 people in Sweden are at risk of becoming long-term unemployed and unemployment is today the highest in 20 years. When unemployment in the rest of the EU member states falls, it has increased in Sweden instead.

This is especially important for young people who, despite having a high level of competence, risk being fired in the event of cuts because they have not been in a workplace long enough.

It is clear in the January agreement that if the parties do not agree within the established deadline, the government will present the proposal for investigation. The fact that the Liberals and the Center Party in general released Löfven as Prime Minister was defended, among other things, by the fact that they would clearly expand the exceptions in the priority rules. The moderates and Ulf Kristersson also offered the changes that are now on the table at the very least, the Center Party and Liberals could probably have achieved even more in this area with a government led by M. Not doing what has been promised would be to come back. to disappoint the voters.

Changes are needed now

The parties have had a long time to agree on the changed terms in the labor law, but have not been able to reach an agreement within the allotted time, however. Giving them more time, first and foremost, would not change the outcome, and furthermore, the changes must be applied now. It is time for the Center Party and the Liberals to decide. Do you want to continue to act as a doormat for Stefan Löfven and let the Social Democrats postpone the LAS negotiations for a few weeks, and then a few months, until these necessary reforms are finished after the elections?
