So many are laid off at Volvo Cars

At the end of April, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson announced that the company would lay off 1,300 employees. At the same time, Samuelsson claimed that the company has employed 4,000 salaried employees in recent years. Corona was a trigger, but according to the company it was a major shift towards electrification and digitization. Now Thursday comes the announcement of how many salaried employees will be laid off.

650 are laid off, of which 90 percent have left voluntarily. 60 of them are in Skövde. 230 also gets a new job within the company. Those who leave voluntarily receive different types of severance pay and security packages. In other respects, there are also natural deviations within the company. It is primarily the employees in product development who are affected.

– It was a greater interest than we had thought it left voluntarily, says human resources manager Hanna Fager.

According to the director of human resources, consulting companies, among others, catch those who choose to leave.

– We know that consulting companies have expressed interest, including companies that work with mobility and the automotive industry.

10 percent will resign according to the priority rules.

– There we have had laser negotiations with the unions, says Hanna Fager.

– We sat down early with the unions and the Security Council to come up with a modern and sustainable solution. We work on a voluntary basis with specific skill changes. Making an active choice makes it easier to move forward.

Hanna Fager says it reduces the company’s fixed costs, but that’s not the main cause.

When asked by GP’s why the corona pandemic is accelerating change, Hanna Fager says an organizational change was needed.

– We only need to stop and refine the organization, but of course this also reduces our fixed costs.
