French President Emmanuel Macron has backed the opposition in Belarus and on Tuesday met with its leader Svyatlana Tsichanouskaja.
Svyatlana Tsichanouskaja, who has fled the country and is now in Lithuania, said after the meeting that Macron had pledged his support in possible mediation with the Belarusian regime.
Recently, Macron called the Lukashenko regime “an authoritarian regime that cannot accept the logic of democracy and clings to force.”
“It is obvious that he has to resign,” Macron told the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche.
Putin’s anger
Macron’s actions caused Russian President Vladimir Putin, who in turn backs President Lukashenko, to turn red.
During a phone conversation, Putin asked Macron to “stay away from the conflict in Belarus,” according to SVT News.
EU leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, will meet today at a summit to discuss possible sanctions against Belarus and Lukashenko.
The last dictator
Lukashenko is called the last dictator in Europe and won another presidential election in August.
The result of the elections has been questioned internationally and in recent weeks there have been protests and mass demonstrations in Belarus.
The Belarusian regime, backed by the country’s military, has responded with violence and kidnapping of dissidents.
