Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to stay away from the conflict in Belarus. The message must have been conveyed during a telephone conversation between the leaders.

“Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and to put pressure on the legitimate authorities from abroad is unacceptable,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The call comes after Macron met with Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya in Lithuania on Tuesday. According to her, Macron, among other things, promised to help in negotiations with the Belarusian authorities.

“He promised to do everything possible to help with the negotiations during this political crisis in our country,” Tichanovskaya told reporters after meeting with Macron on Tuesday.

Last week, the EU declared that Belarusian authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko is not the legitimate leader of the country and Macron has said it is time for him to step down.
