The Finnish Accident Investigation Board in Norway has made an important discovery on the street where Amorella found basic knowledge.

The Finnish authorities have closed the street for the time being.

– No ships are allowed to drive there at this time, says Veli-Pekka Nurmi from the Accident Investigation Board.

Viking Line’s M / S Amorella ferry, which ran aground in the Åland archipelago, has been towed to the repair yard in Naantali, Turku. There, the ship is now under investigation by the Finnish Accident Investigation Board.

– It has holes at the bottom. We also investigated the street and found a find that we are now analyzing. It is a large, hard object that should not be there. What we do know is that it is not the root cause, but it may have been part of the process and we will now assess it, says Veli-Pekka Nurmi from the Accident Investigation Board of Finland.

The authorities are closing the street

There have been several interrogations with the crew and with people who may have information about the ship and the accident. Researchers have a theory about the cause of basic knowledge.

– We think we know, but the investigations are not finished and we cannot say more about it until the investigation is completed, says Veli-Pekka Nurmi.

After Amorella gained the basic knowledge, the ship took to water and deliberately headed for land and ran aground. The street was immediately closed in connection with the rescue work.

– It was temporary. Now that we have informed the authorities about the discovery we made on the street, they have decided to extend the closure. No boats are allowed to drive there at this time. It’s important that the finding is analyzed now to ensure the street is safe for traffic, he says.

The investigation will be completed next summer

Only in a month or two can the Accident Investigation Board give a first presentation of the course of events. After that, more analysis awaits. The final report is expected to be ready next summer.

– We are constantly taking small steps forward. We examined various parts including the street, but also the ferry and equipment. We’ll see how the ship has been steered and whether the technical systems on board worked as they should, he says.

On board the Amorella were 207 passengers and 74 crew members. No person was injured in connection with the accident.

In 2013, the same boat found a basic feel in the same place. According to the investigation report, this was due to the power being cut off and the ship was unable to steer.
