Now France wants to ban wildlife in traveling circuses and change the lives of, among others, captive dolphins.
Some of those celebrating in a big way are the animal rights organization PETA, which calls it a “historic victory,” writes The Local.
– We have popped champagne here, says PETA in a statement.
In late September, France decided to initiate a change in its wildlife management. This means a ban, to be implemented gradually, of wild animals in traveling circuses, writes The Local.
– It is time that the fascination of our ancestors for these wild creatures no longer means that they end up in captivity, says the country’s Minister of the Environment, Barbara Pompili.
Mink farms, dolphin farming and captive killer whales are also subject to the new ban. No date has been set for the ban to come into force, but it will be carried out gradually over the next few years.
Will offer support packages
Some of those celebrating in a big way are the animal rights organization PETA, which calls it a “historic victory.”
– We popped champagne here. Thanks to all who helped us overcome this, says the organization in a statement to the newspaper.
The government also plans to offer circuses and dolphinariums a support package of up to 8 million euros to help them adapt to the bans.
Today, more than 20 European countries have banned or severely restricted the use of animals for entertainment, most recently Lithuania.
