Message of joy for Stina Nilsson: she can compete in the World Cup

It has long been unclear if the biathlon world cup will take place due to the corona pandemic and how it will take place. But on Saturday night, word came from IBU, the International Biathlon Federation, that the World Cup will start as scheduled at the end of November.

But that’s after the changes. The IBU then decided to reduce the number of competition venues in November and December from four to two. Which meant Östersund was unable to host the World Cup as scheduled from November 30 to December 6.

Stina Nilsson can compete in the World Cup

However, the reorganization of the World Cup program means more changes, says SVT.

– It is the decision that each nation may have within its regular quota two men and two women who do not have the formal qualification. This applies to competitions until Christmas, says Olle Dahlin, president of the International Biathlon Federation, to SVT.

The natural thing for Stina Nilsson would have been to start her competition as a biathlete in the IBU Cup, the level during the World Cup, and from there try to qualify for the World Cup.

But earlier this fall, it emerged that all IBU Cup competitions in November and December will be canceled due to the crown pandemic and that the cup will start after the New Year.

A situation that has not made it clear where Stina Nilsson will be able to compete during her first season as a biathlete.

But after today’s announcement, it may be relevant for Nilsson to make the jump straight to the World Cup.

A message that is received by the coach of the national team, Johannes Lukas.

– I think it’s very good, and I almost thought it would. It is important for the World Cup. I think that is completely correct, Lukas tells SVT.

The Biathlon World Cup begins in Kontiolahti on November 27.
