The people, who were implanted with synthetic tracheas, are said to have suffered serious physical injuries, according to the indictment. The previously closed preliminary investigation, which dealt with two personal injury cases, was resumed in December 2018 following a decision by Chief Prosecutor Mikael Björk.

The three patients however later as a result of the interventions.

Denies the crime

Since then, the prosecutor has conducted several new interrogations and obtained new evidence, including in Sweden, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States and Spain.

– Through these interrogations and written tests, it became clear to me that the interventions were carried out in violation of science and proven experience and therefore were not part of any legal form of medical care or study of Authorized research, says Mikael Björk.

– The interventions, which have caused the three plaintiffs serious physical injuries and great suffering, have been carried out completely without legal support. Therefore, I assess that all three interventions should be judged as aggravated assault rather than causing bodily injury, serious crimes, and that it is the former surgeon at Karolinska University Hospital who alone should take criminal responsibility.

Paolo Macchiarini was fired from the Karolinska Institutet in 2016. He denies any wrongdoing.

“Life-threatening methods”

Bosse Lindquist, who has made a remarkable documentary on Paolo Macchiarini, says he is not surprised by the accusation. At the same time, she harshly criticizes the management of the Karolinska Institutet and the hospital for how they handled the case and for how the four complainants who alerted about the errors have been treated.

– One of our best hospitals in the country has allowed a surgeon to experiment with patients, where he was allowed to try completely deadly methods on unsuspecting patients who have since died.

– Instead of listening to the complainants, they have persecuted them and made their lives impossible. How Karolinska has overshadowed and defended this business has not even been investigated at present.

“What’s new is the accusation”

According to Peter Andréasson, press director of the Karolinska Institutet, the criticism they receive is not new.

– We have talked about this so many times and have been very critical about how we handle it ourselves. We have convicted Macchiarini of misconduct in the investigation. We don’t have much more to say about this, says Peter Andréasson.
