Differences in cardiac care between regions in Sweden are so great that place of residence can have an impact on survival of cardiac patients, representatives of the Swedeheart quality registry and various interest groups write in a discussion article in Dagens Nyheter.
The article points out two different interventions against coronary artery stenosis in heart attacks. These can be remedied with a simpler method, balloon dilation, or with a more complicated method, bypass surgery.
For patients with, for example, diabetes, bypass surgery provides significantly higher chances of survival and therefore surgery should be recommended according to guidelines. However, one region in Sweden recommends bypass surgery ten times more than another.
The authors write that the economies of the regions are the likely explanation for the differences. Therefore, it is proposed that the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate be tasked with examining how the regions comply with the legislation, with the aim of developing proposals for measures to reduce inequality.
