The demands of the survivors and relatives for a new investigation into the Estonian disaster are reasonable and justified.
There are new facts on the table. The truth about them must be revealed.
It has been 26 years since Estonia sank during a storm in the Baltic Sea. Four fifths of those on board were killed in the waves. Since then, many have questioned the officially sanctioned explanation that the ship sank, that the bow visor was ripped off and that, as a result, it submerged in water and sank.
The new sensational images may not completely overturn that theory; may still be part of the explanation.

The damage lies a third aft on the Estonian starboard side and extends both above and below the waterline. Here it is illustrated in a graph.

Underwater image of the new documentary series “Estonia: the discovery that changes everything”.
But the images make you wonder if this is the only explanation or the correct one. The old research into the cause of Estonia’s decline simply needs to be questioned and supplemented. According to the new sensational movie, there is a large hole in one side of the helmet. It is four times 1.2 meters at the widest point and is both above and below the waterline. The fact that the hole is now visible is because Estonia is hovering over the muddy bottom where it lies. What was previously not visible at a depth of 85 meters has become visible.
What caused the hole and when, of course, no one can know for sure a quarter of a century later.
Are just that, in combination with other observations unknown to the public that cause question marks to pile up.
A passenger, then a 26-year-old Swedish man, now Estonian consul general in St. Petersburg, for example, saw something white in the water moving to the left. What was that?
The same person lived in a taxi under a car tire. But when he rushed to save her life, he was pretty sure the water was rising from below. So not from the bow visor on car tires. What was the cause?
It should be added that an investigation carried out by the highly respected Johan Hirschfeldt, who, among other things, was President of the Court of Appeal, established that the Swedish defense smuggled electronic equipment into Sweden on two occasions aboard Estonia in September 1994. However, not during this trip. Säpo and the intelligence service They must not want to share information, if they have it. Consideration for national security means they don’t even answer questions about it.

The damage to the Estonian hull is four meters high and 1.2 meters at the widest point. Here it is illustrated in a graph.
Many in the association of relatives and survivors They are convinced that the hole in the hull has been added to the ship by a heavy object. A submarine?
At present it is impossible to know. But what we do know is that it is no longer just emotions or general frustration that is behind the desire for a new investigation into what caused the worst shipwreck in the Baltic Sea in peacetime. No pictures in a big hole.
A hole that hadn’t been known before, at least not for a wider circle.
The association of those who survived the disaster or who have family members who were killed by the waves requires a new investigation of what caused the disaster.
That is a reasonable requirement. The sinking was an important and groundbreaking event, but many have not felt that they have received a satisfactory answer as to why Estonia sank.
After the jaw-dropping visuals, it will probably get even more intrusive.
Otherwise, the risk is that conspiracy theories that are already flourishing will flourish.
There are new facts on the table. This makes a new investigation into the cause of the disaster reasonable. And necessary.
