They have never believed the official version that the bow visor would be the cause of the sinking of Estonia.

Now that there is a documented hole in the helmet, the family association SEA believes that a new investigation should be carried out into the cause of the accident.

– And it must happen quickly and transparently, says Lennart Berglund, SEA president for Aftonbladet.

Lennart Berglund from Säter lost his in-laws in the Estonian disaster in 1994.

Later that year, he co-founded SEA, the Estonia Victims Foundation and relatives. With his strong commitment, he assumed the role of president, something he still holds.

He believes that the actions of the authorities after the accident include a probable cover-up. In any case, the truth has not come to light, it is his firm conviction and that of SEA.

“The biggest scandal of modern times”

– The handling of the Estonian disaster may be the biggest Swedish scandal in modern times! This is how I feel, says Lennart Berglund.

The findings that have now been made support what they have been claiming all along.

– I’m not surprised they found a hole, experts have said that shortly after the sinking. There must be a hole below the waterline, otherwise it won’t sink like this.

– But I’m surprised it was so easy to find. Maybe also over size, it’s a big hole!

The damage is roughly on the waterline, one-third aft of the Estonian starboard side. Here it is illustrated in a graph.

Lennart Berglund is one of the few who could see the images of the film before the almost sensational find. He and the SEA association are preparing for the next step.

“Tell me what happened!”

– We will simply demand that the Swedish government tell us what has happened.

Lennart Berglund believes it is difficult to shake off the suspicion that the authorities probably knew about the hole from the beginning.

– We have requested documents from both Säpo and Must, the military intelligence and security service, but that is the nob. They keep everything a secret!

Are there documents that you have been denied, then?

– They don’t even say if they have anything, it refers to national security, even though it is a civil ship accident in peacetime.

What is it that makes you fear that it is so bad, that it is a blackout?

– For 20 years we have tried to get the authorities to do a new investigation, and we refer to many experts who say that there is no possibility that it has sunk the way it has, if it is not a hole underneath. the waterline.

– Now that you’ve found the hole, you can probably dismiss the bow visor theory and then there’s only one possibility left, which you’ve done your best to hide.

In the weeks leading up to the disaster, the military used Estonia to smuggle military electronic equipment from Tallinn to Stockholm. In an investigation led by the then President of the Court of Appeal, Johan Hirschfeldt, it was established that we did this twice in September 1994, but not on the night of the disaster.

In total, the questions remain so many that a new investigation must be carried out and, with the help of divers, document the damage, quickly and transparently, Lennart Berglund believes.

– And we want total transparency and to be able to appoint the experts involved.

What do you think is the most likely cause of the hole?

– Yes, it appears to be a side collision, obliquely from behind, below the waterline. And what could have happened if it hadn’t been… it must have been a larger object. What it is, we don’t know. It must be fixed!
