It’s time for a debate battle between Trump and Biden

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and incumbent President and Republican Donald Trump will meet Wednesday night to debate.

Supreme Court. The riots. The mental health of the other.

The battle is in Ohio and expectations have been building for months. On Wednesday night, US President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden will meet for the first of three election debates.

Trump has demanded that his opponents be vetted before the meeting, but he also settled Biden.

– Joe Biden will do very well. He’s a professional, Trump said the other day, somewhat surprisingly, about his Democratic opponent.

The comment was made to the Fox News channel and was unusually modest as it came from a man who released his name with harsh nicknames. But it is a well-known strategy to lower expectations of one’s own performance before a debate. And shortly after, Trump was back on the offensive.

– I’ve done more in 47 months than he has done in 47 years and that’s absolutely true, he said, adding that “sleepy Joe” (Biden) doesn’t seem to be able to answer questions.

Biden seems tagged too. In a television interview this weekend, he said the president’s recurring questioning about his mental health reminded him of Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. Biden has emphasized that he looks forward to debate and “holding Trump accountable.”

– I know how to deal with bullies. . . “I hope I don’t take the bait and start arguing with this guy,” he told CNN recently.

HD judge and crown

The two gentlemen meet in front of television cameras and a very small audience, secured by covid, in Cleveland, Ohio, under the direction of Fox News host Chris Wallace. To reduce the risk of spreading the infection, they will not shake hands.

There’s no shortage of topics to talk about – the 90-minute broadcast includes questions about the Supreme Court (current when Trump nominated Conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett this weekend as replacement for liberal HD Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg), covid -19, The Economy, protests against racism and riots that shook certain cities, as well as electoral security, announces the debate committee.

Electoral security and the president’s implicit hint that he may not guarantee a peaceful change of power after the elections are also discussed. And if the moderator doesn’t address the New York Times high-profile report that the president has barely paid federal income tax in recent years, Biden likely will.

Checking quirks

In the United States, where much of the campaign has moved online, this year’s three television debates are expected to play an unusually important role. Four years ago, the first debate between Trump and then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton drew more than 84 million viewers, a number expected to exceed Tuesday’s battle.

Unlike in 2016, when Trump didn’t practice long before the debates, he is now reported to have read and studied Joe Biden’s quirks. For example, the president has often targeted his opponents by saying “Come on man” (sort of “come on boy”) when he’s frustrated, the online newspaper Politico reports.

Biden himself has also trained. On Thursday, he completely refrained from campaigning to prepare for the duel.

A big question is how the 77-year-old will respond to the attacks on his mental health that 74-year-old President Trump is supposed to fire. In recent months, Trump has repeatedly questioned Biden’s wit, claiming he is not competent enough to be president, something that Biden and his team have vehemently dismissed.

Test done?

However, Joe Biden occasionally makes confusing statements and frogs, something that has created some concern among his fellow party members. The undercurrent of Trump saying this weekend that he wanted him and Biden to be drug tested before the debate is likely a criticized interview with CBS that Biden did in August. He was then asked if he had undergone a cognitive test.

– No, why the hell would I do that? . . It would be like saying to you: you took a cocaine test before joining the show, Biden yelled at the reporter.
