New day of deadly fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh

The fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan continues for the second day and both sides accuse each other of heavy artillery fire. At least 39 people have been killed since fighting broke out in Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday, according to the breakaway region. Many are also said to be injured.

Nagorno-Karabakh is located in Azerbaijan but has an Armenian majority. The President of Azerbaijan has declared a partial military mobilization.

Relations between the two countries have become strained since they became independent in connection with the fall of the Soviet Union.

During the years around 1990, a war was fought and, after a ceasefire in 1994, Armenian-backed separatists have in practice been in control of the area. France, Russia and the United States created the so-called “Minsk group” and tried to mediate the conflict, but recent talks failed in 2010.

Armenia and Azerbaijan blame each other for the escalation, while the outside world calls for a ceasefire. Russia and China urge both parties to exercise restraint.
