No to wind energy in a referendum in Malung

52.5 percent voted no to the wind farm, against 44.1 percent who voted in favor. 3.3 percent abstained and 0.1 percent of the votes were considered invalid.

A total of 8,180 people had the right to vote in the municipality of Malung-Sälen. The turnout was 58.7 percent.

– For a municipal referendum in Sweden, it is quite high, says electoral coordinator Mats Gustafsson.

In Malungsfors, the closest district the planned wind farm, 73.3 percent voted against.

– They also had the highest participation, 76.3 percent.

Polling stations closed at 8 pm Sunday and the results are preliminary.

– We had many who voted early, 30 percent in turn. It was much calmer today than it was in early voting, says Mats Gustafsson.

The referendum is the first during the current pandemic.

– Some had to queue, but it worked well. We have had crown adjustments that we have taken into account. Officials have had strict orders.
