Örebro clear winners in Skellefteå

– Overall, we played a good game. They had more puck than we did but we scored the goals, says Borna Rendulic from Örebro, the new addition that graced her team and already scored three goals.

But the narcissists weren’t just sharp forward, the defensive play with goalie Jhonas Enroth in the back was nearly flawless too.

– All respect to Örebro. They have a fantastic goalkeeper and we have to be stronger in front of their goal, says Stefan Hedlund, assistant coach at Skellefteå.

The trio Borna Rendulic, Rodrigo Abols and Mathias Bromé will provide Örebro fans with many wonderful moments this winter, as long as the crowd returns to the stands.

First Croatian in the SHL

Rendulic started the shooter in powerplay after 4.42. A few quick passes outnumbered and then a rock-hard shot over the right shoulder of Skellefteå goalkeeper Gustaf Lindvall. It seemed easy when Örebro’s hottest new acquisition scored his third goal in his second SHL game.

– I don’t think about that. I just try to work on the scorer in training and seize the opportunity when it comes to matches, he says.

Borna Rendulic, 28, is the first Croatian to play in the Swedish hockey league and is closer to playing in the German league last season. Games in Russia and 15 NHL games are also on the resume.

But the game at SHL is something new.

– Here it goes much faster than in Russia and Germany, but I don’t care. I think you can develop as a player here, says Rendulic.

Unchanging enroth

The second period was largely dominated by Örebro, who extended the lead to 2-0 after 3.34. This time it was Rodrigo Abols who directed a shot from the Stefan Warg hill. But it was Rendulic who served Warg.

The expulsions will be of great importance in the SHL this year, at least until the players know the new level of valuation of the referees. Örebro has hired an elite judge to find out where the limits go in training, a smart move. But one or two expulsions were still made.

It didn’t help Skellefteå, who faced an incredibly tight boxplay defense with an indomitable Jhonas Enroth at the back.

At the end of the second half, it was 3-0 when Örebro had one man less on the ice. Linus Öberg broke free and put the puck clearly next to Gustaf Lindvall’s right post.

Örebro remained in full control, winning the match against two goals and had no major difficulty stopping Skellefteå’s fast and technical players.

Midway through the third period, Skellefteå was finally able to break Enroth’s zero when Jonathan Johnson, last year’s points king at Allsvenskan hockey, scored his first goal in SHL.

The end result was determined by Robert Leino from Örebro on an empty box.
