This will be the new entrance of Götaplatsen

More than 100 years ago, before the 300th anniversary of the city, several competition proposals were submitted on what the new Götaplatsen should look like. In the proposal submitted by Gunnar Asplund, one of the most important architects in Swedish history, he had designed an art school together with Götaplatsen.

– We study old competition proposals in relation to work, you can say that the circle is closed, says Sofia Älfvåg, planning architect at the city planning office.

In recent years, the city planning office has worked on a new detailed plan that will allow Akademiska Hus to rebuild the university area between Renströmsparken and Götaplatsen. On Thursday the finished proposal was presented to the construction commission, which unanimously chose to give the green light and refer it to the municipal council for a final decision.

In short, the detailed plan means that a new art faculty will meet on site. HDK-Valand, University of Art and Design, merges with Artisten, where the University of Stage and Music is located.

– The entire Renströmsparken university area is intended to be a creative meeting place for art, humanities and culture in Gothenburg and to be more open to the public, says Sofia Älfvåg.

The parking lot is going to be demolished

The detailed plan means that the parking lot next to Götaplatsen will be demolished. Here a new building will be erected, which will then be linked to the Artist.

– We will get more people in the area. This parking lot has been in this place for a long time, it’s time we got a lift in this area, says Ann Catrine Fogelgren (left), first vice chair of the building committee.

– This will be a unique cluster, both with the Humanist and with the Faculty of Arts, which connects with the institutions located here, I am thinking of the Concert Hall, the Art Museum and the City Theater.

Own ascent from Västlänken

In addition, many public areas will be added and the Västlänken Korsvägen station will also be integrated into one of the buildings.

– This new station up there will give life to the entire avenue. Because today the flow dies down a bit towards Götaplatsen. It will give a big boost with other pedestrian streams, says Mats Arnsmar (S), member of the construction committee.

The proposal is designed by the architecture studio Tham & Videgård, which previously designed the School of Architecture at the Royal Stockholm Institute of Technology, where it won the 2016 Kasper Salin Prize.

However, politicians have certain concerns and have therefore demanded that they receive permanent information about it until construction begins.

Typically, the issuance of a building permit, the last thing required before the shovel is buried, is handled by officials. But in this case, the construction committee has demanded that politicians have the last word on the issue.

– Götaplatsen is the pride of the people of Gothenburg and will soon stand for 100 years and what we will build now will stand for another 100 years. Here we will be very careful that it is something really beautiful, says Hampus Magnusson (M), chairman of the construction committee.

– This is not a place for an ugly piece of concrete, but we should have something really beautiful that Gothenburgers can be proud of for several hundred years.
