This year’s general debate regarding the opening of the UN General Assembly is taking place at a distance due to the corona pandemic.
And the pandemic is the first issue that Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven addresses in his speech that is broadcast on the scratch of the UN in New York.
Together with the leaders of several other countries, including Canada, South Korea, South Africa and Spain, Löfven has taken a position that a future coronavirus vaccine should be distributed fairly among the countries of the world.
– No one is safe until everyone is safe. Ensuring access to vaccines is a global challenge that requires international cooperation, he says in the speech.
Löfven: Bring the guilty to justice
The Prime Minister also links the crown crisis to a host of other issues, such as the labor market, trade, international conflicts, equality issues and human rights.
– Too many leaders and governments use it as an excuse to silence the opposition, civil society and human rights defenders.
The Prime Minister also comments on various ongoing conflicts and current events in the world. Russia has the most space, whose annexation of Crimea and aggression in eastern Ukraine “constitutes a violation of international law, defies international law and causes human suffering,” according to Stefan Löfven.
It also addresses the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, whom he condemns “in the strongest terms.”
– The Russian government must investigate the assassination attempt thoroughly and transparently. The guilty must be brought to justice.
