Houses and hundreds of vehicles burned in Nordmaling

At 1:53 pm on Saturday night, the Nordmaling rescue service was alerted to a fire in Nyåkersvägen, south of Hörnsjö. Initially, the alarm came as a grass fire, which did not turn out to be true.

– The first indication was very unclear, but was thought to be a grass fire. When we rolled a bit, a train conductor reported that a building was on fire, and when we arrived there was a fully developed fire in the building and 20-30 vehicles were on fire, Rescue Leader Curt Byström tells VK.

Next to the building were about 200 vehicles, of which about 100 are said to have burned.

The house was completely destroyed in the fire and the rescue service had to work to prevent the fire from spreading further. A railway passes by the house, against which the fire was spreading.

Initially, it was unclear if anyone was in the building. Police managed to locate the residents, who were safe elsewhere.

Rescue units in Nordmaling, Bjurholm and Vännäs rushed to the scene. In all, between 15 and 20 firefighters were on the scene and battled the blaze. A police patrol and an ambulance were also withdrawn. The ambulance turned without patients.

At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the building was still burning slightly, but the rescue service was watching it.

– It will burn for a few hours, but it’s under control. We will let it burn. There is no risk of spread, says Byström.

Highway 538 that runs alongside the home was closed overnight, but one lane was opened Saturday morning.

During the night, the police conducted interrogations and, where possible, conduct a technical investigation of the scene of the fire. Police suspect the fire may have started and made a report of fire or fire damage.

During the day, the rescue service will investigate whether the environment has been damaged by dangerous substances from the burning vehicles.
