The crashed plane, which was an An-26 transport plane, was heading to a military airport near the city of Chuhuiv, in northeastern Ukraine, when at 7:50 p.m. Swedish time, for a hitherto unknown reason, it was crashed near a highway a couple of miles from the runway.

Images of the accident site shows how the plane caught fire near a highway. 25 people have been confirmed dead. Two people have been taken to hospital with 90% burns to the body, writes Kyiv Post.

The occupants were cadets and pilots from the Kozhedub Air Force University in Kharkiv, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. The aerodrome is used, among other things, for the training of new pilots and the information that emerged during the night indicates that it was during a training flight that the accident occurred.

According to preliminary information, a pilot reported problems with one of the plane’s engines before the accident. However, the mistake should not have had consequences as serious as an accident, the governor of Kharkov told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, according to the BBC.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the crash site on Saturday. On his Facebook page, Zelenskyj writes that a government commission will be formed “as soon as possible” to investigate the cause of the accident.
