At least 22 killed in military plane crash in Ukraine

At least 22 people were killed after a military plane crashed in eastern Ukraine, the country’s Interior Ministry said. Two people were said to have been injured and four remain missing.

On its Facebook page, the Ukrainian Air Force writes that it is a transport aircraft of the Antonov An-26 type. In addition to the crew, several cadets must have been aboard the crashed plane.

The accident, said to have taken place in connection with the landing, occurred shortly before 9 a.m. local time. The fire at the scene of the accident could be extinguished by the rescue service.

On his official Facebook page, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes that a state commission will be appointed to investigate how the accident occurred. The president also offers his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

“We apologize for the pain to the relatives and friends of the deceased. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the president wrote on his Facebook page.

The president will travel to the area on Saturday.
