The press release posted on the Norwegian court’s website does not indicate why King Harald is being treated at the hospital, but he was admitted early Friday morning.
Dagbladet has contacted the Norwegian court communications director, who does not want to comment further on the king’s condition.
Dagbladet further writes that King Harald as recently as Thursday was on an official mission when he left the royal ship at the end of the season, the ship has been spotted along the Norwegian coast during the summer.
As the king is now on sick leave, Crown Prince Haakon will occupy the city council, which is when the Norwegian government meets.
The Expert: Unplanned
If the king is ill or for some other reason unable to work, the crown prize takes over and acts as regent of Norway.
– This afternoon, the idea was that I would go to Maihaugen with the queen and visit her childhood home. This means it was not a planned admission, Caroline Vagle, Royal Expert on Norwegian See & Hear, tells Dagbladet.
In January of this year, Harald was hospitalized for a week due to dizziness and in December he was forced to report that he was ill due to a viral infection.
But despite this, the Norwegian king has enjoyed good health in recent years despite a history of several operations. In 2003 he suffered bladder cancer and only four years later underwent heart surgery.
