Shaken by scandals and the weight of a pandemic-laden economy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is launching a huge package that will put the country back on its feet.
The Canadian government promises to combat social inequality while extending support measures introduced during the corona pandemic.
“Canada is at a crossroads,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday night local time.
He was referring to a second wave of viruses that he said was spreading through Canada.
– We are on the verge of an autumn that can be much worse than spring.
In the last month, the spread of the infection has started to increase again in Canada. On Tuesday, more than 1,800 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported, the highest daily figure since early May, according to Johns Hopkins University in the United States. To date, nearly 150,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with the infection, of whom nearly 9,300 have died.
Possible new choice
The Justin Trudeau government chooses to try to get out of the crisis. A key phrase in the new offensive policy program states that the government “will support people and businesses in this crisis for as long as it takes.”
The package also includes, among other things, a more vigorous fight against climate change, the launch of national child care and the creation of one million jobs. Jobs will be created, for example, through investments in infrastructure, higher education and incentives for employers.
The measures were introduced in connection with the opening of the Canadian Parliament on Wednesday, and before the program becomes a reality, the government must pass a vote of confidence in parliament.
The pandemic has created the largest budget deficit the country has experienced since World War II and has fundamentally changed conditions for government. That is why Trudeau decided to postpone Parliament until September 23, August, to present the new program statement and obtain Parliament’s approval.
– I don’t want a new election. I don’t think the people of Canada want a new election. But if there are elections, we will resolve it, Trudeau has said previously.
Three investigations
It is still uncertain whether Trudeau will win the continued trust of Parliament. His minority government must be supported by one of the country’s three opposition parties, which is not yet clear.
Most Canadians are happy with Trudeau’s efforts during the pandemic, opinion polls show, but in recent times several scandals have erupted around the prime minister. In June, the prime minister’s third ethical investigation during his five years in power was launched, following allegations that a charity linked to his family had been favored in a public procurement.
However, few believe that the government will be overthrown. The fragmented opposition probably understands that a new election during a hot crisis would benefit those in power most, says Geneviève Tellier, a professor at the University of Ottawa, with whom the AFP news agency has spoken.
– It is not possible to have large political meetings at the moment where candidates have a chance to be seen, he says.
