A Russian warship has collided with a 145 meter long container ship in the strait.
The accident occurred at 10 a.m. in the southern part of the Sound, south of the Drogden lighthouse, according to the Danish Armed Forces operations center for TT.
– It’s almost halfway between Sweden and Denmark. I can see that they both sailed north on a slightly different heading and ended up colliding with each other, says duty officer Klaus Rasmussen.
The vessels involved have been inspected and there are no signs of oil leaks. The container ship, which is the flag of the Marshall Islands, is being held in place for further inspection, but the Danish authorities do not have the opportunity to order the Russian ship to stay.
– It is a Russian state ship, so it is Russian territory. So we have no penalty options, Rasmussen says.
The Russian ship has only been inspected from the outside.
– You can see it was a collision, but we have no information about what it looks like inside
The collision will be investigated by the Danish Shipwreck Commission.
Fixed: In a previous version, there was incorrect information about the flag of the container ship.
