Russia is one of the countries outside the EU that is not allowed to come to Sweden to play international football matches.
There is a regulation that prohibits unnecessary travel to Sweden from non-EU countries, as well as the UK, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, it does not make exceptions for elite athletes.
The Football Association wrote to the government about a relief in the ordinance on August 27.
– I do not understand why it is not possible to allow exemptions from the entry ban for elite footballers, in the same way that other professional groups have received. The rigorous international soccer protocols and monitoring, testing and isolation requirements mean that entry of these individuals will carry a significantly lower risk of spreading the infection compared to other permitted occupational categories. We are very disappointed, says General Secretary Håkan Sjöstrand on the Football Association website.
Regulation means that Several international events at the elite level, such as the World Cup, the World Cup and the European Championship, are under threat. Among the sporting events threatened in the near future are the Swedish Open in table tennis on October 3-6 and the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund in December.
After Sweden’s encounter with Russia, two away games await him in the Nations League: Croatia on October 11 and Portugal three days later.
