The turn of the national team: will not kneel

Ahead of the European Championship qualifying match against Hungary on Thursday, the Swedish ladies knelt for human rights and equal value for all. The plan was to do the same in tonight’s away game against Iceland. The event is now canceled and replaced with a minute’s silence for former president of the Swedish Football Association, Lars-Åke Lagrell, who passed away on Monday.

“A” moment of silence “will be held by both teams before the start of the match to remember and pay tribute to one of the great leaders of Swedish football,” the association wrote in a press release.

The cancellation of the event does not change the position of the women’s national team on the issue of equal value for men.

“The national team stands united in the message against racism and all forms of discrimination,” they write.

– This does not mean that the next home game will not be played, for example, says Martin Fredman, director of security for the national team.

“Of course there was also hatred”

When the team knelt before the game against Hungary, it aroused many emotions. The players received strong criticism and praise.

– Many emotions and it is clear that there was also hatred, you go in and delve into the darkest threads of Flashback and at that level it is worse, says Martin Fredman.

Before the action, Fredman thought the reactions would be worse.

– When we talked about it earlier, I was prepared for even more based on the seriousness of it. Now there were many opinions but not so that they became pure threats or criminal threats. Bad tone in many cases, absolutely, but we have agreed with the players. There are no private messages for those that end up as illegal threats or violations that are criminal.

– We have prepared ourselves to carry out police reports if necessary and continue to do so.
