Cracks discovered in Stockholm subway cars

In total, there are 271 subway cars. They make up the lion’s share of the Stockholm Metro car fleet and operate all lines.

The local newspaper Mitt i writes that the fatigue cracks were discovered several years ago, and that since 2017 there has been a dispute in the arbitration institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce between the traffic office and the manufacturer Bombardier over who is the responsable.

Stockholm Region Traffic Administration considers, however, that it is so important to fill in the cracks that repairs should begin promptly, that is, before the conflict is resolved.

Kristoffer Tamsons says that cracks do not affect safety.

According to Mitt i, the works will be carried out by the MTR operator, which operates the metro. Under one proposal, repairs will be carried out in installments in Hammarbydepån. It is estimated that it will take three years to get the wagons in order.

– These are small cracks that are barely visible and do not affect safety. But I am glad that now we can deal with this sourdough, says traffic councilor Kristoffer Tamsons (M) to the newspaper.

In August this year, the new SL train, C30, started rolling on the Stockholm metro. These trains are also supplied by Canadian Bombardiers. They are manufactured in Hennigsdorf, in northern Germany. A total of 96 new wagons have been purchased at a cost of just over SEK 5 billion.
