The lobster fishing of the season began on Monday and early Tuesday morning is once again the time of the traditional auction of the first lobster of the season.

As usual, it is held at the Gothenburg Fish Auction in Fiskhamnen.

Last year’s lobster sold for SEK 52,000 per kilo. But the record for the most expensive price per kilo for the premiere lobster is from 2012, when it cost SEK 102,000 per kilo.

At 07:00 the fish auction bell rang and the first lobster of the year was sold for 34,000 SEK per kilo.

“We did what we were supposed to”

The buyer was Pontus Johansson from Västkustpojkarna, who shortly after the auction ended said it is for a client.

– It seems expensive, but we did what we were supposed to do. I had a request for this so I did what I had to do, he says and tells him he called a customer lobster.

He continues:

– Now we will donate the same amount of money to charities.

This is not the first time he has bid for the first lobster of the year, the previous price was 20,000 SEK, he says.

Pontus Johansson doesn’t know exactly how the lobster will be cooked, but says it will likely be eaten on Tuesday night.

Who can sell the first lobster is decided by lottery, this year the lobster was from the same fishing boat as last year.

New rules of 2017

New rules for lobster fishing were introduced in 2017, and it is important to know what applies before leaving.

For example, lobster cans are the only tool allowed. The minimum size of a lobster caught is nine centimeters, if the lobster is smaller than that, it must be returned to the sea immediately.

Lobster fishing is allowed this year from September 21 and then you can fish until the last of November, and for commercial fishermen it is until the last of December that applies.
