The Akavia union criticizes the fact that the judiciary does not receive more in the autumn budget and warns of the consequences, as the situation for the prosecution and the courts is already tense.

– It is strange that they choose to invest a lot in the police and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, but forget about the whole legal chain in between. If the judiciary does not get more money, we will be short of 90 judges and the prosecution will be forced to fire a hundred prosecutors, says Lee Wermelin, president of Akavia, which is a union of academics, including lawyers.

Whole chain

It cannot say exactly how much more money the judiciary needs, only that the entire chain of justice must be given more resources to function.

– Today we talk a lot about gang crime, but we will not be able to fight it as successfully as other countries if we do not have time to investigate and prosecute the crimes that are committed. Then the investigations are closed and then you can do whatever you want in Sweden, says Lee Wermelin.

He welcomes the demand of the Christian Democrats that the prosecutor be invited to the Riksdag’s Justice Committee to describe the consequences of the government budget.

– There is a very high risk of cuts to the judiciary, at the same time that serious violence and gang crime is increasing, says KD legal policy spokesman Andreas Carlson.

“The additions failed”

It is difficult for him to understand why the January parties choose to “underfund” prosecutors and courts, while at the same time beating their chests with a historically large budget.

– The Public Ministry warned in its budget request that it may be necessary to remove 100 prosecutors if the authority does not receive a subsidy. When the budget was presented today, it turns out that the additions did not materialize, he says.
