Research shows: Amorella was driving on an ice buoy

– It is true that Amorella has collided with an ice buoy, but that is not the cause of the accident, Veli-Pekka Nurmi, director of the Accident Investigation Center, tells SVT News.

– The damage that has happened to the ship is due to the grounding and that is why Amorella remains on the ground, he continues.

However, it is still too early to say when Amorella hit the buoy and what role it plays in the course of events.

According to the sea rescue recordings, the situation with the stranding arises first, after which they deliberately decide to bring Amorella ashore again.

– The teacher decided to direct Viking Amorella as a base because the situation was such that he was drowning. This is a very dangerous situation, so it is important to stabilize the boat quickly. A good way to do this is to put it in an upright position, says Veli-Pekka Nurmi.

The cause is not yet known

The reason why the ship began to ingest water is not yet known.

– No, we don’t know, it’s an important thing to explain, but what we do know is that some kind of grounding has occurred. We believe that it is the cause.

There is still no indication that the ship has decomposed and therefore started to ingest water, according to Veli-Pekka Nurmi.

– But, of course, we must check that all technical systems worked correctly, he says.

So it’s not the ice buoy that has caused the damage?

– No. The buoy plays a role, but not an important role. Amorella has collided with him. There can be no reason for this, says Veli-Pekka Nurmi.

There is a tugboat at the ship site, which will eventually be brought to Naantali for repair.

“Extraordinary”

The passengers, mostly from Sweden and Finland, were picked up on Sunday from the ship with the smaller boats from the sea rescue. They were then taken to different terminals depending on where they were going next.

Some have been allowed to sleep in hotels and others will be on their way home if they are not home yet.

This type of event is unusual.

– This is very extraordinary. This is a ship that does this route every day all year round and it is very unusual for something off track to happen, says Eleonora Hansi, information manager for Viking Line Scandinavia.

The shipping company carries out the further investigation in collaboration with various authorities, mainly the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.
