Lagrell was president of the Swedish Football Association from 1991 to 2012, and was also Governor of Kronoberg County from April 1, 2002 to December 22, 2006.

Lagrell, who grew up in Jönköping, began playing both soccer and handball and showed early leadership qualities.

At age 14, he became involved with IK Cyrus and later served in Östers IF, Jönköpings Södra, and Smålands Fotbollförbund.

He was general secretary of the Swedish Football Association from 1980 to 1991 and assumed the presidency in 1991 after Lennart Johansson.

During the Lagrell year As president, SvFF’s turnover increased tenfold. The national team achieved increasing success and the average audience at the Allsvenskan went from 15,194 to 10,258 in 2007 in 15 years.

But Lagrell also received criticism from those who did not think that the sale of the television rights was correct or that the shared rounds of Allsvenskan were the right way.

Lagrell has meant a lot to the development of Swedish football, but he was not a man of big words, as his farewell speech at the 2012 annual meeting demonstrated.

– Swedish football has nothing to thank me for, I am the one who is indebted to Swedish football, with those words Lars-Åke Lagrell ended his time in the federation.

Lars-Åke Lagrell is in great mourning for his wife Yvonne, their children and grandchildren.
