The government proposes reforms of just over 105 billion SEK in 2021 and of just over 85 billion Swedish crowns in 2022 to “get Sweden out of the crisis”.

Today, the government presents the budget bill for 2021 to the Riksdag. The government proposes a green restart package for the Swedish economy, but also long-term reforms to help solve social problems. The proposals are based on an agreement between the ruling parties, the Center Party and the Liberals.

The recuperation

“The government presents a historically comprehensive budget to increase the pace of climate change, strengthen well-being, improve corporate conditions and competitiveness, increase vulnerable areas, accelerate integration, fight crime, keep people more in their wallets and increase city-country cohesion. Sweden must emerge from the crisis and build a better and more sustainable society than it was before the pandemic, “the government writes in a press release.

The Swedish economy is expected to recover during the second half of 2020, as is the rest of the world economy. However, the government estimates that it will be several years before the recession ends, but that Sweden has good conditions to cope with the recession, given the low public debt.

The recession, but also government action, means that public finances are expected to weaken dramatically in 2020 and 2021.

Reforms of just over SEK 100 billion

To accelerate the recovery and stimulate the economy, the government is proposing a global fiscal stimulus with reforms of just over SEK 105 billion in 2021 and just over SEK 85 billion in 2022. Funds from the Recovery Fund are expected to the EU contribute to the funding.

“A temporarily expansive fiscal policy is needed to get Sweden out of recession as quickly as possible and get people back to work. Therefore, the government proposes green investments, resource additions to wellness, and tax cuts on employment and entrepreneurship. In addition, opportunities for adjustment in the labor market are improved for those who want or need to change. The measures contribute to accelerating the pace of climate change, supporting the recovery and increasing employment throughout the country, ”the government writes in the press release.

In addition to the pandemic, new proposals are being put forward to deal with the long-term problems of society. Unemployment, climate change, growing welfare needs, the gap between city and country, lack of integration, knowledge outcomes in schools and crime must be tackled with ongoing reform work, says the government.
