India’s biggest tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal, reopens to visitors on Monday, despite the constant spread of COVID-19 in the country during the summer.
At the same time, the harsh restrictions imposed in March have gradually been relaxed and the opening of the world-famous mausoleum in Agra is seen as a symbolic gesture that life has returned to normal.
The Taj Mahal usually attracts seven million visitors a year. When the attraction reopens, 5,000 tourists a day will be allowed, a quarter of the normal influx. Rules to maintain distance will also apply and tickets will only be available for purchase online.
The giant country India, with 1,300 million inhabitants, has registered the highest number of infected in the world after the United States. To date, 5.4 million Indians have been diagnosed with the infection and just over 86,700 people have died in suites from the coronavirus.
Recently, about 1,000 deaths and about 100,000 new infections have been reported daily.
