“Certainly not the question that the ship was about to sink”

Jan Hanses, CEO of Viking Line, says all the passengers have been evacuated from Amorella.

On Sunday afternoon at 12.50, Viking Amorella ran aground on the outskirts of Åland. Jan Hanses, CEO of the Viking Line shipping company, tells SPT that they still do not know the cause of the ground connection.

– The cause may be, for example, a technical error or human error, he says.

According to Hanses, the ship ran aground first. The ship then took in water in one section, and that’s when the captain decided to drive to shore to just get stuck.

– This is done to ensure that the stability of the boat is sufficient. It was never about the sinking of the ship. This boat would float even if three sections were filled with water, Hanses says.

The captain decided to evacuate about 200 passengers and the crew of about 80 people. According to Hanses, this was because the ship’s stability was still being calculated before the ship could be removed from the site.

– Either we move it with our own machine or it has to be towed. There is no schedule yet.

Amorella also ran aground at approximately the same location in 2013. This happened because the ship lost power and could not be maneuvered. Hanses says the coincidence is probably a coincidence.

– It is clear that the archipelago’s waterways are narrow and if something goes wrong, this can also happen, he says.
