Tadej Pogacar vann without Tour de France-debut.
And he became historic as the first Slovenian to win the cycling classic.
After taking the lead during the penultimate stage, the finish was mostly a formality for Tadej Pogacar, who kept up and won the Tour de France. Pogacar, who will turn 22 on Monday, will thus be the youngest winner of the tour since Henri Cornet won in 1904. It is also the first time that a Slovenian has won the tour.
– It is an incredible feeling to be here in Paris, at the top of the podium. It’s been a fantastic three weeks, an incredible journey, said Pogacar after the win.
Pogacar won three stages on the way to historic victory. Compatriot Primoz Roglic, who led until the last weekend, finished second and was 59 seconds away from the big loss during Saturday’s race. Australian Richie Porte finished third behind the lucky winner, who put in an impressive effort during the first Tour de France of his career.
“I can’t find words to describe my feelings,” Pogacar said.
The final with a goal on the Champs Elysees in Paris was seen by 5,000 spectators due to the coronavirus.
