Big fire in a stack of chips: they are called helicopters

Shortly after 3.30 pm, the rescue service was called at the Energigatan heating plant in Norrköping. There a fire had been lit in a great pile of chips.

At 5:50 p.m., the rescue service had still not managed to control the fire. Instead, the fire had spread to a large pile of wood.

To prevent further spread, the rescue service has requested air support from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB. The authority assists with four helicopters that bombard the area with water.

– Right now, the helicopters have started to bombard with water. At the same time, the material is moved to another safe place with the help of large machines, says Mikael Kalered at 6.30 pm.

He continues:

– We’ll let them bombard for at least an hour. As soon as it gets dark they will go down to Norrköping airport and possibly continue tomorrow.

Risk of spread

Kalered says there is still a great risk of spread. The hope is that the water bombardment will pay off and then lessen the risk.

The fire is being fought by a total of 22 firefighters. According to the forecast, work will continue in the afternoon and evening.

– We will remain in full force until 22:00. But there will be staff on site overnight, says Mikael Kalered.

How should the public act?

– The port is quite central. You should not go to the place unless it is necessary. You should let us work in peace. If you feel discomfort, close the windows and doors and the ventilation.

Kalered’s assessment is that it will be a long time before the fire is completely extinguished. When fire brigade personnel leave the site, the heating plant personnel themselves can take over surveillance.

– It can take two, three, four days before a fire like this is completely extinguished, says the internal commander.
