The rescue service is trying to gain control of a very strong fire in Norrköping.
A very bad fire is breaking out at the Händelöverket heating plant in the port of Norrköping. Firefighters and helicopters are on their way to put out the fire, which is out of control.
According to the rescue service, for unknown reasons it has started to burn in the large piles of wood chips with which the heating plant fires.
– The batteries are very big and very many. It is burning too hot and we have no control over the fire, says Mikael Kalered, internal commander of the rescue service.
The heating plant is located in the port of Norrköping, where there are large warehouses for oil and other flammable fuels.
– We pump with as many people as we can, but there may be a risk of it spreading to other buildings, says Kalered.
Given the size of the chip piles, the rescue service estimates that the fire will last two to three days. To control the fire and prevent the spread, both firefighting helicopters and firefighting aircraft are on their way to the scene.
Händelöverket produces cogeneration and electricity and is burned with waste and wood chips, which are stored in large piles outside the heating plant.
– It is in such a high fire that it has arisen. It can happen by self-ignition, and that may be what happened here. But we don’t know yet, says Björn Persson, regional communications manager for Eon, which owns the heating plant.
The rescue service’s advice to the public is to stay away from the area and, in case of trouble, enter and close the doors and vents.
