The Preem issue could bankrupt the government

The Supreme Court of Lands and Environment approved Preem’s plans to expand its Lysekil oil refinery. Emissions would increase from 1.7 to 2.7 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Preem’s planned plant could mean they become the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the country.

The question is now on the table of the government, which will make a legal analysis of whether an activity can be allowed with respect to Sweden’s climate goals.

Within the Green Party, voices have begun to rise that Preem may be a reason to leave government cooperation. Several insiders are now telling DN that the party cannot remain in government if it is yes.

– We went to the polls because the weather can’t wait. Then we will not be able to participate in the decision that Preem will expand and increase its emissions by one million tons of carbon dioxide each year. It’s completely unreasonable, spokeswoman candidate Rebecka Le Moine tells the newspaper.

The crack between S and MP

Within the Social Democrats, there are many in favor of expansion. The Preem issue is now so sensitive that people within S and MP avoid her in the corridors of the Riksdag, claims a centrally located source according to DN.

Preem has promised several emission reduction measures and is Lysekil’s largest private employer.

– There is also an expectation and hope that we can land in a just transition. So we must be able to generate sustainable jobs. It is increasingly urgent to be able to give that kind of example, what do you mean by sustainable jobs in the industry? Perhaps this could be a great opportunity, which is why it is so important that the issue is dealt with properly, the spokesperson for environmental and climate policy of the Social Democrats, Hanna Westerén, tells DN.

Lysekil City Council Jan-Olof Johansson (S) wants the company to be able to expand.
