It started with a saddle.

In the last decade, crime has escalated to include suspected millionaire fraud.

Despite numerous reports and clear traces of money, the police fail to arrest serial con artist Maria, 29.

The first legal note on the woman we have chosen to call Maria is almost ten years old. It is established in Cåbra, the Public Ministry system for handling criminal cases. This is a criminal court order for theft.

“You have illegally taken and appropriated a saddle from the plaintiff, which has caused him harm.”

The next document is about the same chair. This time, however, the criminal classification is fraud.

“You deceptively sold a saddle to the plaintiffs that you had no right to sell, which was to your advantage with a few thousand crowns and corresponding damage to the plaintiffs.”

Maria was punished with a fine of 80 days of SEK 50 each. She had just turned 20.

It would be the beginning of a criminal path full of lies, double standards and broken trust.

Convicted of fraudulent ads on Blocket

Two years after the theft of the saddle, Maria was sentenced to probation for cheating with false advertisements on Blocket and the horse site hastnet.se. Already on the plaintiff list, it is clear that the fraud has been put into a system. 14 people were behind the lawsuit. Maria acknowledged the facts in all but one case.

“The investigation shows that Maria got into trouble when a horse became ill and needed money for living and veterinary expenses,” the court writes.

During the hearing, Maria spoke about her financial difficulties and that she had recently started taking medication for the neuropsychiatric disability ADD. A supervisor was assigned to help her avoid recidivism.

Maria was positive about the measure, but it did not have the desired effect. Almost a day later, she was sentenced to prison for the first time. The Crime: Fraud Involving Food Lodging Arrangements and Apartment Rentals

“It is now about several repeat offenses in a crime quite similar to the one that was convicted a year ago. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to combine probation with a month in prison ”, it is stated in the sentence.

“Very sad that he has relapsed into crime”

The last decision on Maria and her frauds is from the Svea Court of Appeals. In June this year, the court rejected an appeal regarding fraudulent new rentals. Maria was also sentenced to prison this time.

Erik Jonsson is a fraud investigator with the Northern Region Police. He has been mapping Maria’s crime for several years, since she grew up in Västerbotten.

– It is very sad that he has relapsed into crime over and over again. But with most fraud crimes, it is probably facilitated by the fact that you don’t need to know the person you are cheating.

– What I investigated was a lot about fraud through Facebook and Blocket and others. There you can be quite anonymous.

In recent years, Maria is also suspected of defrauding people in her neighborhood. Aftonbladet has spoken with several men who have had relationships with her. They testify about how they have been misled in various ways into paying bills, making deals, and making joint purchases. In at least one case, Maria must have secretly obtained a loan in the name of her boyfriend. Now she has debts of more than a million crowns.

– She’s incredibly manipulative. When you talk to her at first, she is very beautiful and nice, but it is all just a facade, says one person.

– It’s extremely frustrating that I can just keep fooling people.

Maria denies the accusations made by her ex-boyfriends.

The answer: “The police can contact me”

When Aftonbladet communicates with Maria by phone, she denies the accusations the men make.

– I’m not condemned for that.

But have you done the things they say?

– No, God no.

Do you mean that the people who have contacted us are lying?

– Yes.

Can you give an explanation that makes it more likely that they are telling the truth and not you?

– I do not know. I do not want to talk any more. This is probably something the police should contact me about. They did not call.

In recent years, Maria has lived mainly in the Stockholm area. Aftonbladet has unsuccessfully sought out the police officers responsible for the investigation being carried out against her.
